Back Link Strategies for Your WordPress Site

Great…you’ve built your first site with WordPress! You have it nicely monetized with WordPress, Amazon, Clickbank or a CPA offer. There’s only one problem–no traffic! If you don’t have traffic, you don’t have sales.

You have a couple of choices here. You can either pay for traffic, which is a tricky proposition if you don’t know exactly what you are doing and can afford to take a potential loss, use free methods for building back links, or invest in some automated tools to help you get those back links. There is no doubt that using fully automated tools will get you where you need to go faster, but they are expensive and often require a monthly fee.

If you are just starting out, here are a few ways to get yourself some back links without spending a ton of money:

1) OnlyWire: OnlyWire has a free WordPress plugin that allows you to submit your posts to a number of social bookmarking sites just by clicking a button. It submits to some high PR sites, but does have the annoying feature that you must log into your e-mail and confirm some submissions. You can also pay a low fee and not have to deal with this annoyance.

2) Article submission: Submitting articles to directories is a tried-and-true method to drive traffic to your site. While some advise submitting articles to any and every directory you can find, it’s not a good overall strategy. It’s far better to concentrate on directories that have real page rank and authority, such as EzineArticles.com, ArticlesBase.com, and GoArticles.com. EzineArticles.com seem to have arbitrary rules and regulations that can change on a whim, but if you build up a nice bank of articles with them, you will have clicks through to your money site for months, if not years, to come.

3) Web 2.0: Blogging sites such as Squidoo.com, Blogger.com, HubPages.com are all valuable places to build back links to your money site. A very nice way to create links on Web 2.0 sites is by using Posterous.com. You simply sign up for Posterous by sending an e-mail to post@posterous.com and an account will then be created for you. You can then choose “Autopost” and have Posterous post to a variety of Web 2.0 sites such as Facebook, Twitter, FriendFeed, Blogger, Xanga and WordPress.com.

4) Blog Commenting: Leaving comments on other people’s blogs is another good strategy. But don’t be lazy and leave lame comments such as “Great site! I’ll be back soon!” When I see a comment like this on my own sites, I immediately trash it, and you probably do too. So why waste your time leaving a comment that has no hope of being approved? Try to find forums that are in your niche and leave a link back to your site in anchor text if at all possible.

5) Forum Profiles: Another great avenue for back links. These can be difficult to find, though. Try a Google search for “Powered by phpBB”+your keyword. Create a profile, then leave your anchor text in your signature. Be cautious with this; many forums will can you in a heartbeat if you add a signature the moment you sign up for an account. If the forum has enough page rank, it’s worth making a comment or two on the forum, then adding a signature in a week or two.

6) Video creation: If you don’t know it already, YouTube.com is now the second largest search engine after Google, so getting some videos out there is definitely worth the effort. They get indexed almost immediately, and are a great way to build back links to your site. You can simply re-purpose one of your articles for video content. There are several options to make free movies, such as Windows Movie Maker and Cam Studios. You don’t need to make an Oscar-worthy creation; just put your main points in PowerPoint and narrate the rest. It’s claimed that if you show your face, you have more credibility with your audience, which makes sense. You definitely don’t have to be Hollywood-star attractive; just be well-groomed and speak with sincerity. Even if you just show your face for a few seconds at the start of your video, or upload a still picture of yourself, it will aid your credibility.

But real power in back linking comes when you start to link all of these strategies together in a calculated way that looks natural to Google. There are far more sophisticated linking strategies than the ones I just presented that can propel your site to the front page of Google faster than you ever thought possible.
